Guinness Special Export

The story behind Guinness Special Export is a fascinating one. Back in the 1940s, the Belgian brewer John Martin went on a beer expedition. He boldly crossed the English Canal in 1944, where he eventually reached the gates of St James Brewery. He walked through those gates with an intention that are equally impressive as the famous gates of St James brewery.

Fierce as he was, John Martin requested a unique vintage of Guinness, being brewed specifically for Belgium. He wanted a stronger Guinness, with less hops, sweeter aftertaste, and a lower bitterness to suit the Belgian palate. Guinness being open to new ideas and innovative thinking, approved his request, thus giving John Martin the approval and authority to export "Guinness Special Export" to Belgium. Guinness Special Export, also referred to as GXS, became the first Guiness to be served in Belgium.

This beer is an adventurous brew of black gold. 8% alcohol creates a strong body. It has rich malted flavors in combination with toasted barley. Licorice and caramel play supporting roles, along with molasses, hints of vanilla and dark fruity tones. Creamy and light in texture and containing all of the distinctive characteristics of an Irish beer, it was a departure from the norm but still unmistakably Guinness. An Irish stout with a continental touch.

Aroma: Roasted barley, butterscotch, toffee and blackcurrant.

Flavour: Full-bodied roasted coffee flavour, with bitter chocolate, salty liquorice, molasses and dark fruit accents.

Palate: Creamy and light in texture. Smooth with a gentle effervescence and warming mouth feel.
